How to Behave

Tips on cultural norms and respectful behavior

Respectful greetings

Use 'Xin chào' to say hello and be polite. A light nod or handshake is common; avoid loud or aggressive behavior in public spaces.

Shoes off indoors

Remove shoes when entering private homes and some guesthouses or temples; watch for signage and follow local hosts.

Temple etiquette

Dress modestly at religious sites, remove hats, speak quietly and avoid pointing feet toward altars or monks.

Bargaining and market behavior

Bargaining is normal at markets for souvenirs; be friendly and reasonable. Respect sellers and avoid aggressive haggling.

Safety Guide

Safety

Đà Lạt is generally safe for travelers; petty theft can occur so keep valuables secure and be cautious with phones in crowded areas. Road safety is the main concern—motorbike traffic, narrow winding streets and wet/icy roads in the cool season require careful driving or a local driver. For outdoor activities use reputable guides, wear helmets and appropriate gear, and check weather conditions before hiking or canyoning. Emergency medical facilities are available but serious cases may require transfer to larger hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City.

Winter (Dec–Jan)

Cool to cold nights (sometimes single digits °C), foggy mornings and occasional chilly winds — bring warm layers, a hat and a light waterproof jacket.
