Things To Do
in Kawthoung

Kawthoung (also spelled Kawthaung) is Myanmar's southernmost town at the tip of the Tanintharyi Region, sitting on the estuary across from Ranong, Thailand. It is a low-key port and gateway to the Mergui (Myeik) Archipelago and Lampi Marine National Park, known for clear seas, island scenery and sea‑gypsy (Moken) communities. Kawthoung mixes Burmese, Mon, Karen and Thai influences in its food, markets and architecture, with a relaxed border‑town feel and slow pace of life.

Infrastructure is basic compared with big cities, but the town is the jumping-off point for excellent snorkeling, diving and island hopping in one of Southeast Asia’s least-developed archipelagos.

Temperatures are warm year-round, with the hottest months in March–April. Sea conditions and visibility for diving are best in the dry months.

How to Behave

Tips on cultural norms and respectful behavior

Dress Modestly

Dress conservatively in town and when visiting religious sites—cover shoulders and knees; beachwear is fine on beaches but not in town or temples.

Respect Religious Sites

Remove shoes and hats when entering pagodas and mosques; be quiet and respectful during prayers and rituals.

Ask Before Photographing People

Always ask permission before photographing individuals, especially in Moken villages and places of worship.

Polite Greetings

A friendly nod or 'mingalaba' is appreciated. Use both hands when offering or receiving items in formal situations.

Safety Guide

Safety

Kawthoung is generally safe for tourists but there are a few caveats: healthcare and emergency services are limited, and boat safety/maintenance standards vary — choose reputable operators and lifejackets. Avoid alcohol-fueled disputes, be cautious at the border after hours, use insect repellent to reduce mosquito-borne illness risk, and check travel advisories related to regional political conditions before travel. Carry travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.

Tipping in Kawthoung

Ensure a smooth experience

Tipping Etiquette

Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. Small tips for guides, boat crews and helpful staff (US$1–5) are common. Restaurants rarely expect tipping—round up the bill or leave a small amount for exceptional service.

Payment Methods

Cash (Myanmar kyat) is king in Kawthoung; carry sufficient kyat for markets, boats and taxis. Major hotels or tour operators may accept USD or bank cards in some cases, but ATMs are limited and card acceptance is patchy. Exchange money beforehand or use Ranong (Thailand) for better banking options.

Best Time to Visit

And what to expect in different seasons...

Dry season (November–February)

Cooler, drier and the most pleasant time to visit — calm seas and good visibility for diving, snorkeling and island hopping. Accommodations and boat schedules are reliable.

Hot season (March–April)

Hot, humid days with increasing temperatures; still possible to visit islands but mid‑day heat can be intense — early starts recommended.

Monsoon / Wet season (May–October)

Heavy rains, rough seas and frequent cancellations of boat services. Many island operators suspend trips; expect muddy roads and fewer tourist services.
